Eloping at The Keep

East Coast Tasmania, Australia

The Keep is a place to make an elopement feel like a retreat. Its sandstone tower stands on a rocky hilltop in Goulds Country, surrounded by forest and long views across northeast Tasmania. There is a wonderful contrast in scale here: an immense landscape, and a warm, private place to spend time together.

For couples drawn to Tasmania’s east coast, it offers a different perspective on the region. You are inland, above the trees, with granite underfoot and the coast in the distance. We would love to help you get married here.

A sandstone tower with a Tasmanian story

The Keep was inspired by the fortified towers of the Scottish Highlands. Its own account of the building’s history describes how a local couple saw the exposed plateau and dramatic boulders and commissioned a home that responded to that setting. Local trades helped turn an ambitious idea into the tower that stands here today.

The resulting building has an unmistakable silhouette: three storeys of sandstone, tall windows and a compact footprint among the rocks. Inside, natural textures and warm interiors create a comfortable base for a stay together. The surrounding landscape remains the main event.

What makes an elopement here special

The setting gives a small ceremony a strong sense of place. The tower and granite boulders offer striking backdrops, while the forest creates quieter spaces for portraits. Staying where you marry also gives the day a lovely rhythm: time to get ready, a personal ceremony, a walk with your photographer and an evening to enjoy being married.

The outdoor bath is another reason to stay a little longer. Carved from a single piece of granite, it sits among the boulders looking out over the trees. Top Australian Homes’ feature on The Keep explores that balance of dramatic surroundings and thoughtful comfort.

The best ceremony position depends on the conditions. We help shape the timing and location with your team and the property, so the views, light and comfort of the day all receive proper attention.

Make the stay part of the celebration

The Keep is designed for two overnight guests, with exclusive use of the property. Its current stay information includes home-cooked meals and local provisions, making it possible to settle in and enjoy the place.

Upstairs views, a record player and an outdoor soak invite a slower pace. In an interview with IN THE SAC, owner Jono Stagg describes the care behind the retreat and its connection to the surrounding wilderness. It is an appealing setting for a wedding stay that continues beyond the ceremony and photographs.

Seasons and getting there

Spring and summer offer longer daylight hours for portraits and exploring. Autumn and winter suit an earlier ceremony, warm layers and an evening inside as the light fades. This is an exposed hilltop, so allow flexibility for wind and changing conditions in every season.

The property is at 535 New England Road, Goulds Country, inland from St Helens. Follow the venue’s arrival directions and aim to arrive in daylight: the final approach includes gravel roads. Allow the journey its own space in your plans, rather than arriving in a rush on your wedding day.

Planning your elopement at The Keep

Accommodation is for two, and an elopement or other event needs the property’s prior agreement. Confirm ceremony arrangements, any guests and the current minimum stay before booking around a wedding plan. The venue’s FAQs explain these details and the approach to the property.
