Pumphouse Point for Sarah and Jono's Tasmanian Elopement

Pumphouse Point, on Lake St Clair in Tasmania

For the winter of June 2021, Sarah and Jonathan planned on a journey that would redefine their love story.

Initially set on a grand New Zealand elopement at Roys Peak in Wanaka, the couple had to recalibrate their dreams due to the pandemic’s travel restrictions.

What started as a disappointment soon turned into an opportunity to create something even more meaningful—a magical Tasmanian elopement at the breathtaking Pumphouse Point on the serene Lake St Clair planned by Britt from The Elopement Collective.

From New Zealand to Tasmania

Sarah, a talented events coordinator, and Jono, an electrician with a heart of gold, had initially booked their elopement with the Elopement Collective back in 2019.

Their vision was clear: a winter wonderland helicopter elopement atop Roys Peak surrounded by the stunning New Zealand landscape.

However, as the pandemic’s impact deepened, Australia and New Zealand’s travel bans made this dream unattainable.

Rather than postponing their elopement indefinitely, Sarah and Jono chose to elope in Tasmania, embracing the island's rugged beauty as the new backdrop for their vows.

Elopement 2.0: Pumphouse Point, Lake St Clair

The decision to elope at Pumphouse Point, a historic and secluded retreat on Lake St Clair, proved to be the perfect choice. Pumphouse Point has a rich history, originally constructed in the 1940s as part of Tasmania’s hydroelectric scheme. The pumphouse, perched at the end of a long jetty stretching out into the lake, is now a unique accommodation site, offering stunning views and an unparalleled connection to nature.

The surrounding area, known for its pristine wilderness, is part of Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed wilderness, adding a layer of significance to the couple's decision to elope there.

The winter chill only added to the charm of the location, with the snow-capped peaks reflecting off the still waters of Lake St Clair.

This iconic location, known for its raw beauty and tranquil atmosphere, was the ideal setting for a couple who wanted to start their married life on their own terms.

"Josh, Jono wanted me to pass on his thanks for sharing a whisky with him prior to the ceremony. The only downside of a secret elopement is not having your nearest & dearest there to keep you company, so he really appreciated you being there. And of course, thank you from us both for our ceremony - it was casual & fun, but emotional & moving. Your natural ease in your role as celebrant gave us confidence too and we feel so lucky to have started our married life in such a positive, joyful way and on our own terms."

Capturing the Magic

On the day of the elopement, the scene was set for something truly special. Sarah and Jono were surrounded by nature’s grandeur, with the serene waters of Lake St Clair providing a perfect mirror for the overcast sky above. The ceremony, officiated by Hobart wedding celebrant and elopement expert Josh Withers, was a blend of heartfelt emotion and joyful celebration. Josh’s natural ease and warmth as a celebrant brought a sense of calm and confidence to the couple, making their vows feel deeply personal and uniquely theirs.

Jono found comfort and camaraderie in sharing a pre-ceremony whisky with Josh, a small but significant moment that helped ease the nerves that often accompany such an important day. This small act of kindness was just one example of how the Elopement Collective ensures every detail is tailored to the couple’s needs, making their day as stress-free and memorable as possible.

The magic of Sarah and Jono’s elopement was beautifully captured by the talented team at Bulb Creative. Their ability to seize the raw emotion and natural beauty of the day turned moments into memories that will last a lifetime. The photos and videos from the day are not just images; they are a testament to the love, care, and joy that filled the air at Pumphouse Point.

Adding to the day’s elegance were the stunning blooms provided by The Romantics. Despite the logistical challenges of transporting fresh flowers to a remote national park during a lockdown, the arrangements were nothing short of perfection. The flowers complemented the natural surroundings, adding a touch of sophistication to the wild beauty of the Tasmanian landscape.

After the elopement, Sarah and Jono couldn’t contain their happiness. In her feedback, Sarah expressed her overwhelming gratitude for the Elopement Collective and everyone who made their day possible. Her words were filled with joy and appreciation:

"Oh my goodness Britt!!! Thank you so, so much <3 <3 We are so over the moon in love with these photos & videos - a few tears were definitely shed! Thank you again so much for our incredible elopement! We are just so happy we did it our way & couldn't have done it without you. We have told most of our family & friends now too so we are very happy for you to share our elopement as it suits."

Sarah and Jono’s elopement at Lake St Clair was a reminder that even when plans change, something beautiful can emerge from the unexpected. Their decision to elope in Tasmania at Pumphouse Point was not just a change in location, but a reaffirmation of their commitment to each other, made even more special by the challenges they overcame together.

“We are still on cloud 9 after our elopement - despite the honeymoon now officially being over & the fast come down back to reality... Josh, Jono wanted me to pass on his thanks for sharing a whisky with him prior to the ceremony... Your natural ease in your role as celebrant gave us confidence too and we feel so lucky to have started our married life in such a positive, joyful way and on our own terms."

Sarah and Jono’s story is a beautiful example of how love, determination, and the right support can turn even the most challenging circumstances into a joyful and unforgettable experience. Their Tasmanian elopement at Lake St Clair’s Pumphouse Point will forever be a cherished memory, not only for them but for everyone who had the privilege of being a part of their journey.
